The latest count in the Democratic primary for mayor of Mount Vernon in lower Westchester County has the top two contenders waiting for absentee ballots.

Shawyn Patterson-Howard leads incumbent Mount Vernon Mayor Richard Thomas by 204 votes in a field of four. This is according to unofficial results from the Westchester County Board of Elections. Thomas, who faces charges for allegedly stealing campaign funds, is seeking a second term and is not ready to concede. Patterson-Howard, who once served as the city’s Commissioner of Planning and Community Development in the Thomas administration, would become the city’s first woman elected mayor if she goes on to win in November. Meantime, incumbent Yonkers Mayor Mike Spano easily won his Democratic primary race as he seeks a third term.
