New York state Education Commissioner MaryEllen Elia welcomed back students, teachers and administrators this week in a number of school districts, including East Ramapo in Rockland County.

Elia and Board of Regents member Judith Johnson visited three schools in the East Ramapo Central School District September 5. Here’s Elia:

“I have been to East Ramapo a number of times. And they recently had a bond vote that was supported by their community,” Elia says. “Many of the portions of the bond vote really help to support construction in a number of their buildings.”

Elia says she was invited not only to welcome back students and others but to check on the construction. In the summer of 2016, Elia had appointed a state monitor to the troubled district, which is now operating under a contingency budget.
