After setting sail for Washington, D.C. Monday, the sloop Clearwater reversed course and returned to the Hudson River.

After leaving from Croton in Westchester County Monday morning on a voyage to raise concerns about threats to federal clean water protections, Clearwater crew and staff decided to cancel the trip after assessing the weather. They say the sloop is designed for carrying cargo on the river rather than for ocean voyages in rough conditions. Recent severe weather in the Atlantic and a tropical storm in the Gulf impacted the decision. Clearwater will continue with the June 29 Capitol Hill forum on clean water issues, and the cargo of concern packed on the sloop is destined for Washington another way.
