A newly-formed group in New York is holding a rally Tuesday evening in the Hudson Valley, pointing fingers at a major retailer concerning the conditions of workers abroad.
Several activists in the Hudson Valley are calling on Gap officials to sign a legally-binding fire and safety agreement to ensure the safety and dignity of workers in Bangladesh and around the world. They say many clothing retailers have signed on to the agreement, including H&M and the parent of Tommy Hilfiger, but not Gap. The rally against sweatshops, organized by the new Hudson Valley Watch the Gap, is set for 5:30 at the Gap Distribution Center in Fishkill, in Dutchess County. No word yet from Gap Inc. officials, though the company does have a social responsibility section on its web site, saying they take their commitment to improving working conditions in Bangladesh very seriously.
