A coalition of environmental groups Thursday filed a petition to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency asking General Electric to pursue additional PCB dredging in the Hudson River.
The group, including the Natural Resources Defense Council, says GE would leave behind more PCB contaminants in the Hudson that originally estimated when the company began its cleanup plan in 2005.
This fall, GE wrapped up its final season of dredging.
NRDC attorney Dan Raichel said “EPA has ignored the inconvenient truth about GE’s toxic contamination of the Hudson for too long: there is more pollution than it realized."
General Electric has maintained that it has completed all necessary cleanup overseen by EPA and that it will remain on the river to monitor pollutants and restore wildlife habitat.
