Scenic Highway Celebrates Veterans

The scenic highway that winds up Prospect Mountain overlooking Lake George in the southeastern Adirondacks is extending its hours and waiving fees this weekend to honor Veterans Day.

The Veterans Memorial Highway usually is closed in mid October, and there's a $10 fee per car. But this year, several local veterans persuaded state officials to extend the season in honor of Veterans Day, which is Wednesday.

The highway will be open from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. There are three scenic lookouts along the 5 ½-mile road, providing stunning views of Lake George and nearby mountains.

Local veterans plan to greet and visit with people at the lookout areas.
