New York Governor Andrew Cuomo has used his new powers to officiate weddings to marry a same-sex couple.

Cuomo married Peter Thiede and David Turley in Manhattan outside the Stonewall Inn, a gay club where in 1969 police harassment of customers sparked three days of riots.

Thiede, a financial analyst, met Turley, a human rights worker, in June 2011 after Cuomo signed a bill legalizing gay marriage in New York.

Cuomo was granted power to officiate weddings by state lawmakers last week during the wind-down of the legislative session.
