New crime statistics compiled by the Pew Charitable Trusts, based on U.S. Justice Department data, show New York state dramatically reduced its crime and incarceration rates over the past 20 years. For more on the reasons behind the drop in the crime rate and the smaller number of prisoners, WAMC News spoke with Executive Deputy Commissioner of the state Division of Criminal Justice Services.
