(AP) Work is beginning on a new pedestrian bridge over the Mohawk River in Amsterdam.

When complete, the $16.5 million Mohawk Valley Gateway Overlook bridge will connect the city's southern neighborhoods and the Erie Canalway Trail with the city's downtown north of the river.

State officials say the span will enhance recreational opportunities while making it easier for pedestrians to cross the river.

Construction on the bridge was scheduled to begin Tuesday. Officials say the construction will create 300 jobs.

The project was approved in a 2005 ballot referendum.
