Massachusetts state fire officials say the wildland fire that has burnt about 950 acres in northern Berkshire County is 90 percent contained. The East Mountain Fire began as a brushfire in Williamstown on Friday and spread into the Clarksburg State Forest. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
The state Department of Fire Services says firefighters will monitor the fire daily until the area receives significant rain.
Firefighters were putting out hot spots Tuesday and will return to the scene Wednesday morning.
The fire – which impacted the Appalachian Trail but no structures in the area – is the state’s largest wildland fire in decades.
