A major development is expected next week in the long running effort to expand passenger rail service in western Massachusetts.

Consultants working for the Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) are going to issue a report on three final alternatives for east-west rail.

The analysis will be presented to a meeting Wednesday (Sept. 30) of an advisory committee made up of elected officials and business leaders from western and central Massachusetts.

One of the members of the committee is Democratic State Senator Eric Lesser of Longmeadow – a longtime advocate for east-west rail.   He spoke with WAMC’s Pioneer Valley Bureau Chief Paul Tuthill.

The record-setting tenure of Springfield Mayor Domenic Sarno. The 2011 tornado and its recovery that remade the largest city in Western Massachusetts. The fallout from the deadly COVID outbreak at the Holyoke Soldiers Home. Those are just a few of the thousands and thousands of stories WAMC’s Pioneer Valley Bureau Chief Paul Tuthill has covered for WAMC in his nearly 17 years with the station.
