A cinder block has fallen through the ice on Joe’s Pond in West Danville, an official sign of spring in northeastern Vermont.

Participants in the Joe’s Pond Ice Out Contest buy tickets and guess the date and time the block will fall into the water as a result of the ice melt.

WCAX-TV reports that the block went through the ice at 6:07 a.m. Wednesday but there was no word on who won.

The contest began in the 1980's to relieve cabin fever.
