Pittsfield has set a date for the destruction of a parking garage deemed structurally unsafe.
Mayor Linda Tyer says that by June 1st, the Columbus Avenue parking garage in downtown Pittsfield will be but a memory.
“It’s not just demolition of the existing garage," Tyer told WAMC. "It includes paving and line painting and lighting and landscaping for the surface lot.”
Tyer says the new lot will have “slightly more spaces than the existing garage,” which would have 278 spaces in total if its second level hadn’t been closed in 2014. She pegged the project’s budget at around $2 million, and said the city would be reaching out to the garage’s neighbors before the demolition.
