Pittsfield, Massachusetts has received a $6.6 million grant from the Federal Aviation Administration to rebuild runaways at the municipal airport.

The decades-old runways at Pittsfield Municipal Airport need repair.

City officials say the grant will improve safety, and save Pittsfield money in the long run. An airport expansion was completed in 2015 at a cost of more than $20 million.

Work would start in April, forcing the airport to close or restrict landings until it’s completed in the summer.

MassDOT and Pittsfield’s share of the work is roughl y $300,000 each for the project.

The city council still needs to accept the grant at the next meeting September 12th.
