The mayor of Springfield has joined calls for a feasibility study of high-speed east-west rail in Massachusetts.
Following the grand opening this week of Union Station after a $95 million restoration, Mayor Domenic Sarno wrote a letter to the chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee urging that funding be included in the state budget to study linking Springfield and Boston by high speed rail.
"I want to see something happen," said Sarno. " We should have and we demand some connection from Boston to Springfield, east-west rail."
State Sen. Eric Lesser sponsored the amendment to study east-west high speed rail. Gov. Charlie Baker vetoed a similar proposal last year, citing a statewide rail study already in the works.
