Connecticut Senator Richard Blumenthal is calling for federal resources to combat a deadly new opiate that has hit the streets.

Blumenthal says carfentanil is 10,000 times more powerful than morphine; it’s even been used as an elephant tranquilizer.

The Democrat says state law enforcement has also reported more counterfeit prescription opiates — one drug disguised or mislabeled as another drug.

Speaking in Harford Tuesday, Blumenthal renewed his call for federal help to fight what he calls a growing epidemic.
