After nearly 30 years with the same flag, Burlington, Vermont, is holding a contest to find a new flag design that will capture the imagination of city residents.
Burlington Mayor Miro Weinberger, a Democrat, wants a flag that will help unify the community. The current flag was designed by then-eighth grader Cara Wick as part of a leadership project in 1990.

WCAX-TV reports that City Arts, a local arts organization, will take flag design submissions starting this fall. A panel will select the best ones and residents will vote to select the winning design.

Officials say they would like the flag to be worn by first responders and be used on Burlington merchandise. They hope to have a design completed and a flag flying above City Hall by the end of the year.
