The University of Vermont College of Medicine has a new name after receiving the largest donation in the institution’s history.

On Friday school officials renamed the school “The Robert Larner, M.D. College of Medicine at The University of Vermont.”

Dr. Larner, a native Vermonter, gifted $68 million to the college, making it the largest gift ever to a public university in New England.

UVM President Tom Sullivan welcomed Dr. Larner and his wife Helen to a ceremony via videoconference.

“Hello Bob and Helen, and welcome, virtually, to your University of Vermont campus,” said Sullivan.

The gift brings the couple’s lifetime contribution to the university to $100 million.
