South Burlington officials and the University of Vermont are teaming up to plan a multipurpose arena in the city.
Officials  have announced a joint study with UVM to assess the feasibility of constructing the arena, named the "Catamount Center."

It would house between 5,000 and 6,000 people for athletic and other university events. It could also be opened up to concerts and family entertainment shows.

South Burlington officials are hoping the facility will enhance the city's downtown area as well as the university.

City Manager Kevin Dorn says property taxes will not be used to pay for it. Any funding will require voter approval.

A working group appointed by the city and UVM will study location and other details about the project. A report is expected by Aug. 15.
