A Vermont Senate committee has voted to recommend to the full Senate that it suspend Senator Norm McAllister while criminal sex charges are pending against him.

The 64-year-old McAllister has denied three felony and three misdemeanor charges in connection with alleged sexual misconduct and has also rejected calls to resign. Authorities say one of his alleged victims had worked with him as an intern at the Legislature.

The resolution calls for suspension not expulsion.  It is expected to be voted on by the full Senate when it convenes in January.

The Franklin County Republican’s trial is tentatively set for March.
