Two large maple syrup producers are setting up operations in the Northeastern Vermont community of Island Pond.

The company Sweet Tree has set up operations in the former Ethan Allen furniture plant. It expects to produce some syrup this season and hopes to have 200,000 taps set on 7,000 acres by next year.

Sweet Tree hopes to eventually use 500,000 taps.

Sweet Tree CEO Bob Saul tells the Caledonian Record his company chose Vermont because the state has the best maple of any state in the nation.

Meanwhile, Quebec-based Bernard and Sons is seeking farmers to build its network of producers in the area with the possibility of a building a processing plant.
