A coalition including more than 30 Vermont organizations is calling for an excise tax on sugary drinks.

The Alliance for a Healthier Vermont will hold a State House press conference on Tuesday to launch a campaign for a 2-cent-per-ounce excise tax on sugary beverages.

Members say the tax can help prevent costly illnesses related to obesity and reduce health care costs.

The group proposes to use the revenues from the proposed tax on funding for health care, food insecurity, and wellness programs for low-income Vermonters.
