Adjunct professors at several Vermont colleges have voted in favor of forming labor unions.

Adjuncts at Saint Michael's College voted 46 to 26 on Monday, following similar votes at Champlain College and Burlington College last week. They are among more than a dozen colleges and universities who have joined Adjunct Action, a project of the Service Employees International Union, in the last year.

More than 40 percent of faculty at Vermont's private, nonprofit colleges and universities work part time, and nearly three-quarters are not on the tenure track. Adjunct faculty typically have no job security, benefits and lower pay.
