U.S. Senator Patrick Leahy says there's more of an "internationalist attitude" in Vermont than in other states.

Leahy is touting the newly enacted appropriations bill for the State Department and U.S. foreign assistance, passed on Jan. 17 in the federal omnibus spending bill.

Leahy, a Democrat in his seventh term in the Senate, highlights cutting aid to Afghanistan in half, providing a record-high $6 billion for AIDS and HIV initiatives and setting human rights and other conditions on military aid to Egypt and other nations.

Leahy is the current chairman of the Senate's budget committee for the State Department and overseas U.S. assistance.
