One of two national unions has withdrawn from a race to represent thousands of Vermont home care workers. On Wednesday the Service Employees International Union withdrew its petition to the Vermont Labor Relations Board to represent home care workers.

That leaves the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees as the only union vying for workers' support.

SEIU State Director Matt McDonald tells the Burlington Free Press his union saw that AFSCME's pitch to the home care workers seemed to be resonating with those who were going to be voting.

About 7,000 Vermont home care workers are scheduled to vote by Sept. 23 whether to be represented by a union as they negotiate pay rates with the state.
