Hartford, Connecticut police have arrested Mayor Pedro Segarra's former chief of staff, accusing him of improperly using a city vehicle after he resigned last month.

Jared Kupiec was charged Tuesday with using a motor vehicle without the owner's permission and interfering with police, both misdemeanors.

Police say they were investigating smashed vehicle windows earlier this month when they discovered that one of the vehicles was owned by the city and parked in front of Kupiec's apartment. Segarra's office has said Kupiec acknowledged using a spare set of keys to take the SUV without permission.

Ross Garber, Kupiec's attorney, issued a statement Wednesday saying they are addressing the matter and the arrest does not diminish Kupiec's hard work and accomplishments for the city.

He is due in court on Aug. 8
