On this week’s 51%, ties to FDR. First, a woman pens a memoir about her polio and kinship with Franklin Roosevelt. And you’ll hear about an effort to garner votes and preserve Social Security in honor of First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt.

Karen Chase chronicles her childhood with polio and talks about the 1950s polio outbreak in the U.S.  as part of her memoir, Polio Boulevard. Her book comes during the same year our nation marked the 60th anniversary of Dr. Jonas Salk’s polio vaccine. Her book also comes on the heels of the September PBS broadcast of a documentary on the Roosevelts by Ken Burns.

The book is Polio Boulevard, from the State University of New York Press. You’ve been listening to author Karen Chase. She resides in the Berkshires, in western Massachusetts.

And that’s our show for this week. We hope you join us for the next one. Thanks to Katie Britton for production assistance. Our executive producer is Dr. Alan Chartock. Our theme music is Glow in the Dark by Kevin Bartlett. This show is a national production of Northeast Public Radio.
