Programming Notes: March 2020

President Trump gave his state of the union address, the Kansas City Chiefs won the Super Bowl (for the first time in 50 years) and fears of the coronavirus have not yet subsided. February gave us a lot to reflect on, but we are ready to march into the next month. Let’s see what WAMC has prepared for us.

Gearing up for the election, special coverage of the Super Tuesday primaries and caucuses will begin March 3 at 8 p.m.

WAMC will begin airing The Splendid Table from American Public Media, starting March 1 at 3 p.m. The Splendid Table, hosted by award-winning food writer Francis Lam, has been celebrating the intersection of food and life for more than two decades. A culinary, culture and lifestyle program, it has hosted our nation’s conversations about cooking, sustainability and food culture and has introduced us to generations of food dignitaries. Listeners can expect a modern, multicultural weekly snapshot of the food world – exploring different cultures, cuisines and ideas, as well as the small personal stories that come out of the expansive world of the table.

This month on Person Place Thing, host Randy Cohen sits down with Danielle Gustafson, a visual artist turned digital strategy executive in the financial services sector. Gustafson (also a bat expert) launched the New York Stock Exchange's first website and grew its digital footprint through 2009 before expanding her scope to start-ups, not-for-profits and banking. Cohen also connects with the president of the International Women’s Health Coalition, Françoise Girard. A lawyer by training, Girard is a longtime advocate and expert on women’s health, human rights, sexuality, and HIV and AIDS. Person Place Thing airs Friday nights at 10:30 p.m.

The Academic Minute will feature weekly takeovers from Cornell College and the Albert Einstein College of Medicine this month.  Topics will range from the search for love and capturing CO2 in our climate to statins, applied behavioral analysis and the gut microbiome. We’ll also hear cutting-edge research into slow writing, million dollar blocks and contemporary fiction. Catch the segment each weekday at 7:30 a.m. and 3:56 p.m. on WAMC.

Coming up at The Linda, WAMC's Performing Arts Studio – we open the month with The Mountaintop, a work that sheds light (and humor) on the life of Dr. Martin Luther King on Sunday, March 1 at 3 p.m. We’ll also end the month with a tribute to Aretha Franklin from Rochmon Record Club’s Aretha Franklin – A Selected Retrospective on Thursday, March 26 at 7:30 p.m. Please visit thelinda.org for more details and events.
