Programming Notes: December 2019

With the impeachment hearings, family gatherings, holiday shopping and preparing for the start of a new year, we finally approach the end of 2019. As we pause to reflect on all we’ve accomplished over the last 12 months, time marches on. Let’s see what’s in store for us this month.

We begin airing the Metropolitan Opera season on Dec. 7 with Philip Glass’s “Akhnaten,” followed by Tchaikovsky’s “The Queen of Spades” Dec. 14, Verdi’s “Macbeth” Dec. 21 and Mozart’s “The Magic Flute” Dec. 28.

This month on “Person Place Thing” we hear from David Neumann, Robert Wilson, Valerie Steele and Shakina Nayfack as they converse about dance, fashion and all things art airing Friday nights at 10:30 p.m.

On “The Academic Minute” we will feature the best segments from the past academic year (September 2018 – August 2019) starting on Dec. 26.  Look for segments featuring exciting research on how we react to art in a contemporary environment, why papercuts are such a nuisance and our most popular segment of the year – why everyone procrastinates, but not everyone is a procrastinator. To begin December, we’ll feature takeover weeks from Connecticut College, Oxford College of Emory University and Franklin & Marshall College. On Christmas Day we will feature a special holiday segment on the origins of Old Saint Nick.  Tune in every weekday at 7:30 a.m. at 3:56 p.m. and online at AcademicMinute.org.

Late December means the holidays and we’ll hear the traditional “A Paul of Winter Solstice Special” on Dec. 21, A “Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols” Dec. 24 and on New Year’s Day, “Capitol Steps Politics Takes a Holiday, New Year’s Edition” at 2 p.m.

Coming up at The Linda, WAMC's Performing Arts Studio: “West Point Brass Quintet and Quintette 7 Holiday Concert” Dec. 5 from 8 p.m.-10 p.m., and “The Nutcracker Ballet” Presented By Marcus Rogers Dance Company Dec. 7 at 7:30 p.m. and Dec. 8 at 3:30 pm. Check out https://www.thelinda.org/events/ for a full list of events.
