U.S. SECRETARY OF EDUCATION ARNE DUNCAN DISCUSSES EDUCATION REFORM IN THE NEW FISCAL YEAR 2010 EDUCATION BUDGET -

President Barack Obama has submitted his education budget for fiscal year 2010 which starts next fall.

It asks for more money in many of the three or four key areas the President and the Secretary of Education continually refer to - the three pillars: pre-K, K thru 12, and higher education.

Mr. Obama of course stresses the important role education plays in helping the U.S. economy to recover.

So a few days ago, TBOOK sat down (via phone) with Education Secretary, Arne Duncan. We spoke about the proposed education budget, its reforms, and its chances of getting through Congress.

Glenn Busby reports. (14:19)

TEACHER DIFFICULTIES GROW IN MEXICO -

The U.S. is not the only country undergoing education reforms. Neighboring Mexico has its own education problems. And, as we hear, their education system needs some reforming too.

In rural mountainous regions of Mexico, children strive to get an education. But teachers often don't bother to show up for work.

Teacher absenteeism has become a huge problem. Teachers often leave early on Friday, and sometimes don't return to their classrooms until the following Wednesday.

The World Bank blames Mexico's 1.5-million member teacher's union for the sorry state of education in that country. But the union denies any widespread problem.
