There’s buzz in the world of bugs. Soon, billions of periodical cicadas will emerge from the ground after 17 years.

Adult Brood X cicadas will surface across the eastern U.S., appearing as far north as Long Island, but their emergence may differ from their last appearance in 2004.

To learn more about the soon-to-come swarms of signing insects, WAMC’s Lucas Willard spoke with Dr. Timothy McCabe, State Entomologist and Curator of Entomology at the New York State Museum in Albany.

Lucas Willard is a news reporter and host at WAMC Northeast Public Radio, which he joined in 2011. He produces and hosts The Best of Our Knowledge and WAMC Listening Party.
