The longtime head of New York state’s Committee on Open Government has been fired after an investigation found he acted in a sexually inappropriate manner toward a reporter and kept explicit photos on his work computer. The USA Today Network’s Albany Bureau reported72-year-old Robert Freeman also had sexually suggestive emails and images on his work computer. A Department of State spokesman confirmed Freeman had been fired, and that he was investigated in 2013 for inappropriate workplace behavior. An expert on Freedom of Information and open meetings laws, Freeman was frequently consulted by reporters on open government questions.

Inspector General Letizia Tagliafierro released the following statement later Tuesday:

“Based on the preliminary findings of our office’s ongoing investigation into a recent complaint filed against Mr. Freeman, I appreciate the swift action taken by the Department of State. The abuse of a public position to engage in illicit conduct will not be tolerated by anyone at any level in New York State government. We are continuing to work closely with our law enforcement partners on this investigation and encourage anyone who may have additional information regarding this matter to contact our offices.”
