Burlington, VT – Earlier this week, the Burlington City Council voted 8 to 6 to impose a smoking ban in the downtown area of the city between 9 am and 9 pm. On Friday morning, Mayor Bob Kiss vetoed the measure.
Ward 5 Democrat Joan Shannon sponsored the measure. She says the mayor's veto is a disappointment, but not a surprise.
Ward 7 Republican Paul Decelles opposed the measure and is pleased the mayor has vetoed it.
Ward 3 Progressive Emma Mulvaney-Stanak opposed the smoking ban. She says she is a non-smoker and the mayor's veto echoes some of her concerns about the ordinance.
It would take ten votes of the fourteen member council to override the mayor's veto.
