Holyoke, MA – Officials say a $95 million high performance computing center in Holyoke, Massachusetts is on schedule to have construction completed by late next year. WAMC's Paul Tuthill reports...
Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick says the completion of the first phase of construction is a vital step forward in helping grow the state's innovation-based economy.
"We have economies that are a little different region to region, but we have strengths that are common across the whole Commonwealth," said Patrick. "The instinct for innovation, the tradition of invention goes back many, many years here in Holyoke, and it's going to be revived by this project."
The steel structure for the 90,000 square foot building is in place. Governor Patrick and nearly a hundred dignitaries celebrated Tuesday with a traditional topping off ceremony where the final steel beam is raised into place.
The computing center is an unprecedented joint venture by the state's major private and public universities and several high tech companies.
