Boston, MA – Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick signed historic legislation Tuesday to legalize casino gambling. WAMC's Paul Tuthill reports...
The law Patrick signed authorizes up to three licenses for resort style casinos, one in each of three geographic regions and one license for a facility with only slot machines.
Massachusetts is the 40th state to legalize casino gambling. State Representative Angelo Puppolo of Springfield says it's been a long time coming...
"So I think today is a good day," says Puppolo. "I think it's going to be a tremendous opportunity for jobs throughout the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, both in the construction industry as well as long-term jobs in the facilities."
The next step is the appointment of a five member gaming commission that is empowered to issue the valuable casino licenses. A developer has sued over a provision in the law granting a preference to a federally recognized Indian Tribe for one of the casino licenses.
