Irene's Impact Seen on Dunes, Plants

Waterford, CT – Tropical Storm Irene is long gone, but the damage lingers at the beach at Harkness Memorial State Park in Waterford. WAMC's Tristan O'Neill reports...

The Day of New London reports that the boardwalk to the beach is broken and fenced off and the August 28th storm gouged a five to six foot high strip out of the dunes behind the beach. And it moved a channel into a wetland area several feet to the west.

Brian Thompson, director of the Office of Long Island Sound Programs for the state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection, said the dunes are significantly eroded.

In addition, Sharon Douglas, plant pathologist at the Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station, says high winds carried salt spray from marine waters of Long Island Sound, burning leaves on trees, shrubs and other plants.
