Albany, NY – A sample taken near the Vernon plant by the State Health Department detected elevated levels of Strontrium-90. This is the first time high levels of the material have been detected in an edible part a fish.

Strontium-90 can cause bone defects in humans if high enough levels are consumed.

Governor Peter Shumlin issued a statement calling the findings "troubling". The governor called on Vermont Yankee's Owner, Entergy, to resume using extraction wells near the plant.

The fish was collected nine miles north of the plant in the Connecticut River. The Health Department says it can't conclude the strontium-90 definitely came from Vermont Yankee.

Calls to Vermont Yankee were not immediately returned.
