Montpelier, VT – A Vermont law that bars independent candidates from filing to run in general elections after they've lost in primaries is being challenged in court. WAMC North Country Bureau Chief Pat Bradley has more...

Independent candidates used to have until September to file as candidates for the November elections.

But last year, the law was changed to make them file for the general election by mid-June, like major party candidates do. Critics say that unconstitutionally restricts ballot access.

On Thursday, a suit against the state, filed by former congressional candidate Jerry Trudell, goes to trial in Washington Superior Court in Montpelier.
