Defense Could Wrap Up in Massachusetts Corruption Trial

Boston, MA – Testimony may wrap up in the federal corruption trial of former Massachusetts House Speaker Salvatore DiMasi and two associates.

Barring a change in strategy, defense attorneys on Wednesday are expected to call their final witnesses. If that is the case, lawyers for DiMasi, Richard McDonough and Richard Vitale will have concluded their case after calling only a handful of the more than 100 people they had listed as potential witnesses prior to the trial.

The three men are accused of scheming to use DiMasi's clout as speaker to steer two lucrative state contracts to the software firm Cognos in exchange for payments.

U.S. District Court Judge Mark Wolf says closing arguments could be delivered later in the week, with the jury getting the case no later than Monday.
