Census Shows Vermont Has High Per-Student Spending

Brattleboro, VT – U.S. Census data shows that Vermont has the fifth highest average spending on public school students in the country.

The figures show that in 2009 Vermont spent an average of $15,175 per pupil. The national average is $10,499.

New York led the nation with spending at $18,126 per student, with Washington, D.C., New Jersey and Arkansas also all spending more than Vermont.

The Brattleboro Reformer says that along with having one of the highest per pupil spending averages in the country, Vermont also showed one of the highest increases between 2008 and 2009.

Vermont's per pupil spending rose 6.1 percent, compared to a national average of 2.3 percent.
