Boston, MA – The state is investigating a computer virus that could have collected confidential information including names, Social Security numbers, employer identification numbers, e-mail addresses and residential or business addresses. WAMC's Tristan O'Neill reports...
The breach occurred at computer terminals at the departments of Unemployment Assistance and Career Services beginning on April 20th.
At first, officials thought that the virus had been stopped, but on Monday realized it had resulted in a data breach.
Secretary of Labor and Workforce Development Joanne Goldstein says the breach could have affected as many as 1,500 computers including those at the state's One-Stop Career Centers.
Goldstein says the breach has been shut down and the FBI and Attorney General Martha Coakley's Cyber Crime Unit have been notified.
Goldstein says there's no way of assessing the number of individuals possibly affected.
