Pittsfield, MA – Last week, The Wall Street Journal released an article showing that hospital admissions are down across the nation, citing unemployment and more insurance plans with high deductibles as the main culprits. Today, that trend has forced Berkshire Health Systems to take drastic cost cutting measures including laying off over 100 workers. The health provider is also the largest employer in Berkshire County with about 2700 employees. WAMC's Berkshire Bureau Chief Charlie Deitz spoke with Berkshire Health Systems President and CEO David Phelps about the layoffs and how they got to this point in the first place
