Albany, NY – The close of the Vietnam War and the end of the draft fundamentally altered the way in which America's military and civilian segments of society relate to one another. While the nation's all-volunteer experiment with the armed forces has produced a military that is more technical, specialized and professional than its predecessor, it has also produced a military that is staffed by an increasingly smaller cross-section of American society. The result has been a disconnect between civilians and war veterans on a range of issues - namely, the human costs associated with war, and the traumatic events experienced by those who fight them.
