The U.S. Department of Homeland Security said Wednesday that it would no longer let New York residents enroll in its “trusted traveler” programs because of a new state law that blocks federal immigration officials from accessing motor vehicle records. The law went into effect in December and allowed people without legal permission to be in the United States to apply for driver's licenses. Chad Wolf, acting head of the Homeland Security Department, called the Green Light Law "disappointing" during a Fox News interview Wednesday night. Democratic Governor Andrew Cuomo said today on WAMC’s The Roundtable that the move represents a disrespect of the law and extortion.

Dr. Alan Chartock is professor emeritus at the University at Albany. He hosts the weekly Capitol Connection series, heard on public radio stations around New York. The program, for almost 12 years, highlighted interviews with Governor Mario Cuomo and now continues with conversations with state political leaders. Dr. Chartock also appears each week on The Media Project and The Roundtable and offers commentary on Morning Edition, weekdays at 7:40 a.m.
