After months of discussion, Congress adjourned for the summer Thursday with no Zika legislation in sight.

Health officials in Massachusetts are recommending people take precautions this summer to protect themselves from mosquitoes that can spread illness. The much discussed Zika virus is a concern for people traveling out of the area, but there are local risks like West Nile Virus and Eastern Equine Encephalitis.

U.S. Senator Charles Schumer is ramping up an end-of-session push for federal emergency funding to combat the Zika virus.

Connecticut's two U.S. senators say the $320,000 the state is receiving from the federal government to prepare for a potential Zika outbreak represents a fraction of what the state needs. Democrats Chris Murphy and Richard Blumenthal said Tuesday that Congress should pass legislation that authorizes President Obama's request for $1.9 billion to combat Zika.

U.S. Senator Charles Schumer visited Albany Medical Center today, where he called for $1.9 billion in emergency funding to fight the Zika virus.

By now we know that Zika is dangerous for pregnant women and their future babies. The virus can cause devastating birth defects.

But what about for infections after babies are born? Or in older children? Is Zika a danger for them?

So far, all the evidence suggests probably not. But there are a few caveats.

Let's start with what we know.

Every year I spend one to two weeks visiting the Caribbean island nation of Grenada. I don’t go for vacation, despite the allure of that country’s white sand beaches, but rather for work. I spend most of my time in windowless classrooms teaching clinical and research ethics to a number of graduate, medical and professional students from across the region.

If you grew up in certain humid southern parts of this country like I did, mosquitos are simply a part of daily life and culture, especially in the summer. In camp, we would measure our overnight trips by the number of bites we got. And most everyone sports a steady odor of mosquito repellant, kind of the cologne of the American south. It was annoying, and sometimes made your arms and legs look like a topographical map, but more discomfort than outright injury.
