Burlington Mayor Miro Weinberger held a COVID briefing Wednesday afternoon during which he presented information on several projects the city is working on. He didn’t mention protests that have been occurring in the downtown for over a week until questioned at the end of his presentations.

Officials in Vermont have outlined a series of initiatives over the past week to enhance social distancing and minimize transmission of the novel coronavirus. Burlington Mayor Miro Weinberger is announcing additional changes in the state’s largest city.

Monday was the beginning of a new term for Burlington, Vermont city councilors as re-elected and new members were sworn in. Mayor Miro Weinberger then delivered his annual State of the City address.

The city of Burlington, Vermont’s 2018 fiscal year budget included $500,000 to launch an Early Learning Initiative. During this month’s City Council meeting, grant awards were approved that will help organizations expand or create child care availability for infants and toddlers.  The program has been a priority since Mayor Miro Weinberger was first elected in 2012. Now in his third term, the Democrat says the grants fund a vital program for the city and its children.

Nearly one month after Town Meeting Day, the Burlington City Council met last night to swear-in the mayor and council to new terms and hear the State of the City address.

On Town Meeting Day in Vermont, Democratic Burlington Mayor Miro Weinberger was re-elected to a third term.  During his victory speech Tuesday evening, he told supporters it had been a hard-fought campaign — one in which he learned from his two challengers.  The mayor spoke with WAMC’s North Country Bureau Chief Pat Bradley about the results and his plans for the city over the next three years.

One of the most traditional forms of democratic government is occurring in Vermont today.  It is Town Meeting Day and voters are choosing local officials, determining budgets and policies and weighing in on resolutions.

Over the past week,  two candidates have announced campaigns to challenge two-term incumbent Democratic Burlington Mayor Miro Weinberger in the election on Town Meeting Day in March.  On Monday, former city councilor and state legislator Carina Driscoll announced she will run as an Independent.  The lifelong Burlington resident, who is the stepdaughter of Senator Bernie Sanders, hopes to run a grassroots campaign that brings people together to build a new vision for the city.

Local elections in Vermont are held on Town Meeting Day in March.  In the past few days, two individuals have announced campaigns to challenge two-term incumbent Democratic Burlington Mayor Miro Weinberger.  The first to announce is community activist Infinite Culcleasure.  He says will run as an Independent and seek support of the Progressive Party.

Burlington, Vermont is wrapping up the first construction season under the city’s Sustainable Infrastructure Plan. In November 2016 voters approved $25.5 million in general obligation bonds to fund the five-year infrastructure project. The plan includes the repair or replacement of streets and sidewalks, aging fire trucks, the bike path, water systems and other infrastructure resources. Mayor Miro Weinberger says substantial work has been done and the city is on target to meet its goals.

Burlington’s mayor has offered his recommendation for which finalists he believes the City Council should advance the final round of consideration as the city sells its telecommunications service.

In 1957, the Moran Municipal Generating Station began generating electricity for the city of Burlington. In 1982, it shut down and ownership was transferred to the city in 1986.  Since then a number of unsuccessful proposals have been made to redevelop the building. Three years ago, voters approved a ballot measure that authorized city officials to work with developers New Moran Incorporated on a final attempt to create a redevelopment plan. But Burlington Mayor Miro Weinberger felt it was time to make a final decision on the building.

President Donald Trump announced on June 1st that his administration would pull the U.S. out of the Paris Climate Accord.  The move was criticized not only by environmental activists but also business and municipal concerns.  Earlier this week more than 200 members of the Climate Mayors coalition signed the U.S. Climate Alliance’s “We Are Still In” open letter to the global community.  Among those in this region committing to support the Paris agreement is Burlington, Vermont Mayor Miro Weinberger.  The Democrat says the letter is consistent with the city’s long-time position on the environment.

This week, Burlington Mayor Miro Weinberger celebrated the completion of the first phase of rebuilding the city’s 8-mile Bike Path.  After he cut the ribbon near the Lake Champlain shoreline, he discussed a number of initiatives the city is undertaking including waterfront improvements.
