U.S. Open

  • I now have entered, as I do each year (when the Red Sox have failed me), what I consider to be the dark season of my sports fandom. The U.S. Open, my favorite of any sports event, is over and football, which I personally cancelled years ago, is back so hard that Coco Gauff woke up Sunday to nary a word about herself on ESPN’s home page -- and ESPN covered the event.
  • I’ve been losing a lot of sleep lately. The cause of my insomnia isn’t the usual culprit – existential dread. It’s the late night matches at the US Open. The tournament runs at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Queens through Sunday.
  • So if you watched the end of the Alexander Zverev vs. Jannik Sinner round of 16 tennis match at the US Open Monday night, you’re either on the West Coast or likely still very tired. That’s because the epic five-set match, which lasted over 4 ½ hours, didn’t end until nearly two in the morning. And I’m assuming you were watching from home on your couch. If you were at Armstrong Stadium in Flushing Meadows, you had to add on however long it took to drive to wherever you live. At least there’s not much traffic.
