Plattsburgh’s mayor is looking at the possibility of obtaining a plot of land in the adjacent town by annexation. But the idea is not going over well with the town supervisor.

During last week’s Plattsburgh City Council meeting, one councilor quizzed the mayor about developments in a lawsuit between the city and the neighboring Town of Plattsburgh.  Town Supervisor Michael Cashman says the town is countersuing the city regarding a Payment in Lieu of Taxes dispute in which the city claims the town has not properly paid the city its share of Falcon Seaboard payments.

The Plattsburgh North Country Chamber of Commerce hosted its annual State of the County, Town and City forum this morning to hear reports from municipal leaders.

Despite inclement weather, nearly a hundred officials and business leaders from across the North Country gathered in Plattsburgh this morning to hear addresses on the state of the town and city of Plattsburgh and Clinton County.

At the Farnborough International Air show near London in July, Norway-based Norsk Titanium announced that it had selected Plattsburgh to build the world’s first industrial scale high-technology manufacturing plant for titanium aerospace components.  New York state has approved a $125 million investment in the factory and SUNY Polytechnic is working with Norsk to establish production with specialized 3D machines.  
In part two of their interview, Town of Plattsburgh Supervisor Michael Cashman says he is excited to see the first of the Rapid Plasma Deposition machines already moving into temporary facilities.  “I tweet a lot and I’ve been following Norsk and they just tweeted that their first piece of equipment is enroute to Plattsburgh. It’s just one more mile-marker in a very exciting journey for a first in the world type of company moving here to Plattsburgh.”

Two mausoleums in the towns of Plattsburgh and Ellenburg that had been operated by the same nonprofit company ended up under state receivership in 2015 after reports of severe neglect and abandonment.  The state receivership of Whispering Maples Memorial Gardens will be transferred to the two towns at the end of the month.  Repair costs alone are estimated at $146,000.  Town of Plattsburgh Supervisor Michael Cashman plans to join his Ellenburg counterpart next week in Albany to meet with officials.  He tells WAMC’s North Country Bureau Chief that state officials have failed to recognize the emotional fallout Whispering Maples has caused.  “I’m quite upset by the fact that New York State doesn’t take the time to understand the impact  that it has on the local level.”

Voters rejected an accountant and turned to a college counselor on election night in the town of Plattsburgh. As WAMC’s North Country Bureau Chief Pat Bradley reports, the Democrat in the race for the open supervisor seat soundly defeated his Republican challenger.

NYSEG, the New York State Energy and Gas Corporation, announced Wednesday that it will expand natural gas service in the town of Plattsburgh to at least a thousand new customers.

There are waterways everywhere in the North Country. Officials in the Town of Plattsburgh hope they can create a plan that will increase public access to the rivers, streams and Lake Champlain along its borders to enhance tourism, economic development and local recreation.
