Fans will be allowed to attend a live sporting event at Albany’s Times Union Center for the first time in more than a year. The arena’s management announced Thursday that it will open at 10 percent capacity for the NCAA men’s ice hockey regionals March 27th and 28.

Six months after the city’s minor league hockey team departed, arena football is returning to Albany for the first time since 2009. WAMC's Capital Region Bureau Chief Dave Lucas was at Tuesday’s announcement at the Times Union's Hearst Media Center.

The Capital Region JCC Maccabi Games are a torch-relay away from Sunday's opening ceremonies at the Times Union Center.

With major renovations to the downtown Times Union Center nearly complete, the city of Albany secured a long-awaited booking on Tuesday. The NCAA announced that the Division I men’s basketball tournament will return to the county-owned arena in three years for the first time since 2003.  Albany’s first- and second-round games are slated for March 19 and 21st, 2020.

Assemblyman Angelo Santabarbara, a Capital Region Democrat, says he recently learned that a vote to legalize mixed-martial arts could come as soon as Monday. Santabarbara, who  has been a vocal advocate for bringing the sport to New York, said the bill to regulate it has 80 co-sponsors.

In college basketball, it was a close one but Siena narrowly avoided defeat Monday night. After trailing by 16 points to last-place Fairfield in the first half, the Saints rallied to beat the Stags 77-75 at Times Union Center snapping a two-game losing streak.

Led by No. 1 Syracuse, the top six teams in The Associated Press college basketball poll are the same this week as last. Following the 23-0 Orange, who are a unanimous choice to be No. 1, are Arizona, Florida, Wichita State, San Diego State and Villanova.

In college basketball, junior guard Evan Hymes sank the go-ahead 3-pointer with 38.4 seconds left to help Siena snatch a 66-62 victory over Niagara at Times Union Center.

Rob Poole finished with a team-high 15 points.

The University at Albany women's basketball team faced an eight-point deficit at halftime, but rallied past Stony Brook, 66-51, in an America East Conference game in Stony Brook.

And Manhattan had a 62-55 win over the Siena women’s team.

Saints Beat Peacocks, Snap Three-Game Losing Streak

The Siena men's basketball team had a 64-47 victory over Saint Peter's Thursday at Times Union Center.

The Saints snapped a three-game losing streak and are now tied for sixth with Monmouth in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference standings.

Meanwhile, it wasn’t such a good night for UAlbany. The Danes lost to New Hampshire 60-56.

The UAlbany women’s team crushed New Hampshire 88-47.
