NYS Lawmakers Propose A SALT Workaround For Some

Two New York state lawmakers from the Hudson Valley have introduced legislation for a state and local tax workaround for partnerships. The hope is to counter what they call the negative impact of a state and local tax deduction cap under federal tax legislation signed three years ago.

Democrats are in agreement that State and Local Tax deduction changes are bad for New York State.

Two New York congressional representatives are reintroducing legislation to fully restore the state and local tax deduction that was curtailed by federal tax legislation President Trump signed in December 2017. The two lawmakers had introduced a similar measure this time last year.

IRS Says No To SALT Deduction Cap Bypass

The U.S. Treasury Department Thursday moved to prevent residents in high-tax states like New York from using a workaround to the $10,000 cap on state and local tax, or SALT, deductions. Republican New York Congressman John Faso had twice requested clarity on the issue.

Republican New York Congressman John Faso has written to the U.S. Treasury Department. He’s asking for guidance concerning proposed tax changes in Democratic Governor Andrew Cuomo’s proposed budget. Cuomo’s proposed changes come after federal tax law capped state and local income tax deductions.

Two New York state assemblymembers from Westchester County are fighting back against the new federal tax law with legislation of their own. As for tax reforms Governor Andrew Cuomo proposed in his State of the State address earlier this month, the lawmakers say they’re awaiting details but generally like the concepts.

Democratic congressional members along with top New York state elected officials are blasting the Republican budget bill that narrowly passed the House Thursday. The bill paves the way for a GOP tax plan that the Democrats say would decimate New York’s finances and negatively impact middle-class homeowners.
